We are pleased to announce this inaugural issue of the Journal of Ophthalmic Diseases (JOD). Elyns publishing group created JOD to address the need to disseminate innovative research in the field of ophthalmology, particularly, on topics related to physiology of eye, eye infections and disorders, diagnostic procedures, treatment and prevention. The journal’s aim is to provide reliable information on current research and developments in field of ophthalmology.

We intend for JOD to provide a vehicle for basic and clinical researchers, ophthalmologists, optometrists, technicians and other health operators involved in the field of vision, to share the most up-to-date scientific evidences achieved by the research in the field of ophthalmology. The JOD could disseminate all kind of medical research:

  • Basic research, for example, genetic studies aimed at understanding the cause of genetic ocular diseases, development of novel diagnostic and therapeutic methods for ophthalmic diseases, animal and cell studies to evaluate pre-clinically the safety and potential efficacy of new treatment for ocular pathology.
  • Clinical research, such as interventional and observation clinical studies, including report of randomized clinical trials, prognostic or diagnostic study, observational study, case series and single case report;
  • Epidemiological research, such as case control study, cross-sectional study, description with registry data, regarding ophthalmic diseases.

We are strongly interested in translation research, which is the critical step to take innovation (e.g., new drugs but also technological advances) from the laboratories into the clinical environment, particularly, eye clinic and surgical theatre, to improve clinical practice and healthcare. Nowadays the most innovation in the field of ophthalmology are related to the improvement in the technology, e.g., the adoption of multimodal imaging techniques, the advances in widely adopted methods, such as the angiography by Optical Coherence Tomography. Moreover, the basic research, particularly in genetics and molecular biology, could provide more insight in the knowledge of disease, particularly, the inherited ocular pathology, and lead the way to innovative strategies of care for previously incurables blindness. Finally, also submissions of the so-called secondary data studies, such as mini-review and reviews, particularly, systematic and meta-analysis, will be considered.

We have a stellar editorial board of associate editors, with wide research interests, covering almost all the most relevant research fields in ophthalmology, ranging from biophysics, pure and applied human visual psychophysics, to cornea and refractive surgery, from anterior segment surgery to ophthalmic clinical and epidemiological research, from translation research to multidisciplinary disciplines, such as neurophthalmology. We will ask each of the associate editors to present him / her by writing an editorial for the next issues of the journal in order to describe the research field of his / her interest.

We are proud to introduce JOD with an open-source, continuous-publication platform that allows multimedia presentation of clinically significant research. The papers published in JOD are accessible (5-6 days after acceptance) through the Elyns Group web sites, as well as in downloadable PDF versions with additional material. As a peer-reviewed journal, we aimed at quick review process (14 days) without sacrificing high standards of the published papers. We know that the authors and readers need an efficient and timely review. We have and will maintain the highest standards in the review process and publication of papers. Articles should be within the scope of the journal and describing innovative research. We welcome submissions from academy, health providers, industry, and policy makers. We encourage you to have your voice heard in the social networks (e.g., Facebook, Google+, Twitter), as suggested by the “Follow us” section of the Journal website.
